Early Tuesday afternoon, August 12th, the Fort Morgan Police Department received a call for ‘shots fired’ in the 300 block of State Street near Beaver Avenue.
According to the press release from the FMPD, the call came in at 12:52 pm, as the caller stated that a male party, a neighbor, had shot at his home, breaking the window, and was back at his residence. Officers from both the Fort Morgan Police Department and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call and quickly surrounded the residence where the suspect was reported to be. The Brush Police Department had officers in the area and assisted as well.
Out of precautionary measures, schools and nearby businesses, including the post office, library, and the bank, were notified. Officers were stationed at Baker Elementary School to ensure the suspect would not be a threat to the students. The Morgan County RE-3 School District sent out an email regarding the incident. The district decided to place all the schools on their lockout procedure, as no one was allowed to enter or leave the buildings until the threat ended, including staff and parents. Shortly after, the suspect was taken into police custody without further incident. The RE-3 announced the lockout had been lifted just after 1:30 pm.
There is an investigation into the alleged shooting, as there is no threat to the community. No further information is being released at this time.
