97.5 BOB FM and Shine On Salutes Local Veterans
Shine On Automotive and 97.5 BOB FM recently honored two local heroes with the Shine On Salute, celebrating their courage, sacrifice, and lifelong commitment to community and country.
Afghanistan Purple Heart Awardee Receives Shine On Salute
On Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Bob Butler of rural Sterling was presented with a Shine On Salute by Ron Smith, owner of Shine On Automotive. Smith, a United States Navy veteran, presented Butler a metal United States flag engraved with the U.S. Air Force emblem and spoke about the importance of showing veterans the respect and honor they deserve.
A Colorado native and 12‑year Air Force veteran, Butler served on Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams and deployed to Afghanistan five times. On October 5, 2010, he suffered serious injuries when a roadside IED exploded. One teammate was killed and the entire team was wounded; Butler later received a medical discharge following his recovery. For his service he was awarded four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
Erin Butler, Bob’s wife and an Air Force veteran who served four years as a firefighter and another eight years as a civilian firefighter, attended the presentation with their two children, Wyatt, 19, and Emma, 9. Their presence underscored the resilience of military families and the quiet strength that supports veterans at home.
Bronze Star Awardee Recognized with Shine On Salute
On Monday, October 13, 2025, Darrel Wagner of rural Sterling was honored as the first recipient of the Shine On Salute. Ron Smith again led the presentation, giving Wagner a metal United States flag bearing the U.S. Army emblem and reiterating the community’s gratitude for those who served.
Drafted while living in Atwood with family ties to Sterling, Wagner followed his father’s example and served as an Army medic in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968, rising to the rank of E5 (sergeant). For acts of heroism during his deployment he received two Bronze Stars. After an honorable discharge, Wagner returned to Sterling, married his wife Beryl—now married 57 years—and used the GI Bill to begin civilian life. Though he faced hostility on campus at Northeastern Junior College because of his service, he ultimately pursued his passion for ranching. Darrel and Beryl have been recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association for 75 years of breeding and are known for their blue roan horses. The couple have two children and three grandchildren and remain active in supporting their grandchildren’s activities in Peetz and Eaton. When asked about his service, Wagner reflected, “Wouldn’t do it again, but don’t regret it.”
