Emergency crews from Wray respond to train/pedestrian accident - incident actually occurs 2 miles east of Benkelman

In a posting from the City of Wray, on Sunday, August 9, at 7:30 pm Wray Police Department, Wray EMS, and Wray Fire Department were dispatched to a potential accident involving a train striking an individual walking along the tracks at the rail crossing on Grove St. However, after an exhaustive search and further communication with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, it was discovered that this accident had been reported in error to Wray. The accident occurred in Dundy County, Nebraska.

According to information in a press release from the Dundy County Sheriff’s Office, the Dundy County 911 Center received a report of a train/pedestrian accident on Old Highway 34 (River Road) about 2 miles east of Benkelman, Nebraska. Emergency crews from the Dundy County Sheriff’s Office, Dundy County E.M.S., and the Benkelman Fire Department were dispatched to the call.

A 39-year-old adult female was walking eastbound along the railroad tracks when she was struck by a westbound Burlington Northern train. The woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Dundy County Hospital by the Dundy County E.M.S. She was later transported to a Colorado Trauma Center via medical helicopter. The case remains under investigation.
