Current Honoree

Maurice Schaefer
Army
March 2026
Shine On Automotive and 97.5 BOB FM are proud to honor 100‑year‑old World War II veteran Maurice Schaefer of Sterling, our March Shine On Salute awardee.
Maurice received his draft notice on his 18th birthday and served with the 98th Infantry Division, training in Hawaii for the planned invasion of Japan. On September 27, 1945—just weeks after Japan’s surrender—Maurice made a dangerous landing on the shores of Nagasaki in full battle gear, unable to swim, and in water up to his chin. He went on to serve in Tokyo with the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, always showing kindness to the local people.
Maurice recently celebrated his 100th birthday, and Wednesday Ron Smith of Shine On Automotive, a fellow veteran, presented him with a metal U.S. flag engraved with the Army emblem in recognition of his service and sacrifice. Maurice was lovingly wrapped in a Quilt of Valor presented by the Sew Caring Angels of Holyoke.
Maurice now lives at Devonshire Acres, where he’s known for his warm smile and deep pride in having served his country.
Please join us in congratulating Staff Sergeant Maurice Schaefer, our March Shine On Salute honoree. Thank you for your service, Maurice.
