Shine On Salute Honors Marine Veteran Jason Murray for Service, Sacrifice, and Lifelong Commitment to Others

The Shine On Salute proudly recognizes Jason Murray, a Sterling native, Marine Corps veteran, Iraq War survivor, and dedicated mentor to at‑risk youth. His story is one of courage, resilience, and an unwavering desire to help others — even after life changed forever on the battlefield.

A Young Man Called to Serve

Just four days after 9/11, and only newly 18 years old, Jason Murray walked into a Marine Corps recruiting office and enlisted. The Sterling High School graduate felt a deep responsibility to serve his country during a moment of national crisis.

Jason deployed to Iraq as part of the Marine Corps ground forces patrolling Ramadi, one of the most dangerous regions during the war. While on patrol, his unit encountered an IED, and Jason was critically wounded. The blast left him totally blind, altering the course of his life but not his determination.

A New Mission: Helping Others

During his recovery, Jason drew inspiration from a Vietnam veteran who attended college using a tape recorder and a braille typewriter. That example sparked a new purpose in Jason — a desire to help people facing their own challenges.

He enrolled in college, learned new ways to navigate the world, and ultimately earned a degree in psychology. Today, Jason works as a paraprofessional supporting at‑risk middle school students in the Palmer Ridge School District, where his lived experience and compassion make him a powerful mentor.

A Love Story Through Service and Recovery

Jason’s journey has never been one he walked alone. His high school sweetheart, Kelsie, was by his side from the beginning. The two were engaged when Jason enlisted, and after his injury, she traveled to Germany to be with him during his recovery. Their bond — strengthened through hardship, healing, and hope — became the foundation of their life together.

Jason and Kelsie are now proud parents of three children:

• A 19‑year‑old son, recently graduated from high school

• A 16‑year‑old son, entering his junior year

• A 10‑year‑old daughter, preparing for 5th grade

A Community Hero

Jason Murray’s story is not only one of military service, but of continued service — to students, to families, and to the community he calls home. His courage in combat, perseverance through adversity, and dedication to helping others embody the spirit of the Shine On Salute.

This month, we honor Jason for his sacrifice, his strength, and his commitment to lifting others up.
