Darrel Wagner
U.S. Army
October 2025
Bronze Star Awardee Recognized with Shine On Salute
On Monday, October 13, 2025, Darrel Wagner of rural Sterling was honored as the first recipient of the Shine On Salute. Ron Smith, owner of Shine On Automotive, presented Mr. Wagner with a metal United States flag featuring the U.S. Army emblem. Smith, a United States Navy veteran, emphasized the importance of showing veterans the respect and honor they deserve.
Darrel Wagner was living in Atwood when he was drafted into the Army. His family had recently relocated to Sterling, where his draft card was delivered. Following in his father's footsteps, Wagner became a medic and served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. During his deployment, he was awarded two Bronze Stars—the fourth-highest combat medal—for acts of heroism. Wagner held the rank of E5, or sergeant. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Sterling and married Beryl, his wife of 57 years.
Wagner enrolled at Northeastern Junior College using the GI Bill but faced hostility from some students and faculty. He recalled being spat on and subjected to cruel remarks. Ultimately, he left NJC to pursue ranching, his lifelong passion. Darrel and Beryl have raised horses for decades and were recently recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association for 75 years of breeding. The Wagners are especially known for their blue roan horses.
The couple has two children and three grandchildren, and they actively support their grandchildren’s activities in Peetz and Eaton.
Shine On Automotive and 97.5 BOB FM are proud to celebrate our local veterans, heroes, and true patriots.
When asked about his service, Wagner reflected, “Wouldn’t do it again, but don’t regret it.”
