Richard Holtorf has resigned as vice chair of the Colorado Republican Party, stepping down after less than six months in the role.

Holtorf, a former state representative from Akron, cited his plans to run for county commissioner, along with ongoing frustrations working with party chair Brita Horn. His tenure, while brief, lasted more than twice as long as his predecessor, Darrel Phelan, who resigned after just 72 days — also citing issues with Horn.

In a letter to the Republican State Central Committee, Holtorf said internal conflict and what he described as “lawfare” were hindering party unity. He confirmed his resignation and said he remains available through the end of the month to help with any transition needs.

Chairwoman Horn responded with a lengthy letter of her own, accusing Holtorf of shouting at members of the executive team and refusing to submit a written strategic plan for outreach efforts he had agreed to oversee. She included a long email exchange that underscored what she described as an unworkable relationship.

Holtorf disputed that characterization, saying the party needs to operate as a unified team without excessive legal interference.

Horn says the party will hold a special meeting to fill the vice chair vacancy, though details on when and how that meeting will take place have not yet been announced.

In part of Richard Holtorf's resignation letter, it says, 'The primary reason for my departure is driven by my decision to run for Washington County Commissioner, District 1. I feel in this capacity, I can better use my political experience to serve the Republican Party. I can have a real impact on public policy in my community here at home.'
