Logan County is applying for grant funding to replace two aging bridges that officials say are among the worst in the county’s system.
During a recent work session, the county commissioners met with engineer Wayne Howard of Short Elliott Hendrickson, Inc. to discuss applying for a grant through Colorado Counties Inc. The goal is to replace two bridges — one on County Road 26 at the inlet of North Sterling Reservoir, and another on County Road 59 northeast of Iliff at the reservoir’s outlet.
Both bridges are 85 years old and in poor condition. The County Road 26 bridge has a low sufficiency rating in the 30s. Replacing it would cost up to $2 million, with the county responsible for roughly $300,000.
For the County Road 59 bridge — considered the worst in the system — commissioners chose a 75-foot replacement option that would straighten out dangerous curves and improve safety. That project is expected to cost about $2.1 million, with the county covering about $420,000.
Howard said the county stands a good chance of receiving at least one grant this year, with the second bridge likely to be funded next year if necessary.
The grant application is due on November 7th, and the county expects to know by December whether it has been approved. Construction would likely begin in 2027 or early 2028.
