Watch for Certain Spiders While Spring Cleaning

Updated: Apr 15

It's summertime & cleanup is going on. That means cleaning out dark & cool spaces like attics, garages & woodpiles. Places like these are common hiding spots for the Brown Recluse Spider. The Brown Recluse Spider, also known as the violin spider, due to the pattern on its thorax, is the most dangerous spider here in the USA. A lot of people are aware of the Black Widow Spider, while children can be affected more by a Black Widow’s bite, for a lot of people, they can just become very sick. The Brown Recluse has a more

poisonous bite, and a person can die from its bite. Spider bites like these can have dangerous, permanent and highly negative consequences.

People digging around, doing yard work, & spring cleaning, should take precautionary measures. Brown Recluse Spiders like the darkness and tend to live in storage sheds or other dark areas that might not be frequented by people or light. If you have a need to be in your attic or garage, go there and turn on a light and leave it on for about 30 minutes before you go in to do your work. If that is not an option, carry a bright flashlight with you to shine on those areas you intend to clean out. Also, as a precaution always be careful where you put your

hands, and it’s a good idea to always wear thick gloves while you clean out those dark places.
