Sterling fire crews quickly extinguish grass fire near I-76

In a posting from the Sterling Fire Department, at noon on Thursday, October 1, 2026, multiple callers reported a grass fire on the east side of I-76 at mile marker 124.
The fire was moving southwest, and even though the low winds kept growth slow, dense grass and sage produced flames 5 to 10 feet tall. The deep sand in the area made accessing the main body of the fire difficult for the responding crews.
Units flanked the interstate side of the fire before moving onto shooting range property where the bulk of the fire was. Crews extinguished the fire in 10 minutes, and mop-up continued for about a half hour. The fire was estimated at just over an acre, and no injuries or structural damage were reported.
Units Responding: Fire 1, BAT 103, BAT 102, Tender 16, and LCSO.
