1. Soybean Futures Higher as China Curbs Tariffs

Soybean futures were higher overnight after China said it would suspend its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports including farm products.

Beijing said it would eliminate duties of 15% on some agricultural products but leave a 10% levy on others, effective Nov. 10.

Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping met last week in South Korea to finalize a deal hammered out by negotiators.

Under the terms of the agreement, China will purchase up to 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans in the last two months of the year and another 25 million metric tons in each of the next three years, the White House said in a statement.

The U.S. will lower its tariff on Chinese imports by 10 percentage points, also starting on Nov. 10, the statement said.

Still, prices have been capped as purchases from China haven’t been as quick and robust as some had expected.

The Asian nation this week reportedly purchased 10 cargoes of soybeans from Brazil, again shunning U.S. supplies.

Soybean futures for November delivery rose 7½¢ to $11.29 a bushel overnight on the Chicago Board of Trade. Soy meal was up $3.50 to $320.90 a short ton and soybean oil futures added 0.12¢ to 49.65¢ a pound.

Corn futures for December delivery rose ¼¢ to $4.31¾ a bushel.

Wheat futures for December delivery added ¼¢ to $5.50½ a bushel, and Kansas City futures were down 1¢ to $5.35½ a bushel.

2. ADM Q3 Ag Services and Oilseed Profits Plunge

Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) said profits in its agricultural services and oilseed segment plunged year over year in the third quarter amid a sharp drop in its crushing business.

The segment’s operating profit in the three months that ended on Sept. 30 were reported at $379 million, down from $480 million in the same quarter last year, ADM said.

Crushing profit fell 93% to $13 million on an annual basis, the company said.

The decline in crushing profit was “driven by lower margins as a result of muted demand due to the deferral of U.S. biofuel policy and challenges with international trade flows,” the company said in a statement.

Ag services profit, meanwhile, jumped to $190 million from $107 million a year earlier. The company’s refined products segment saw profit of $120 million, down 3%, while its carbohydrates solutions business achieved profit of $336 million, down from $452 million.

ADM reported companywide revenue of $20.3 billion in Q3, up from $19.9 billion in the same quarter last year.

3. Windy Weather Forecast for Oklahoma, Arkansas

Windy weather is expected in parts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, though humidity will remain high enough to stave off concerns about wildfires, the National Weather Service said in a report early this morning.

Low-level winds will move through the region tomorrow, the agency said. Relative humidity will fall to only 40–50%, which will lessen worries about fire weather.

“A stronger cold front will move through late Saturday, which will drop temperatures below normal to end the weekend, and bring the increasing likelihood of widespread freezing temperatures Monday morning,” NWS said.

Dry conditions are also expected this afternoon in western and central Nebraska.

Winds will gust up to 50 mph starting late tonight, the agency said. The intense winds will last through tomorrow afternoon.

“Strong winds and cooler temperatures are expected through the weekend,” NWS said.
