1. Soybeans Modestly Higher Overnight Ahead of WASDE

Soybeans were cautiously higher in overnight trading as investors await the first supply and demand reports from USDA in two months.

The agency is scheduled to release its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report at noon in Washington, D.C., the first since before the government shut down on Oct. 1.

Analysts are expecting the agency’s estimates to be down from the last report, which was released on Sept. 12.

Corn yields will likely be forecast at 183.5 bushels an acre, down from the previous outlook for 186.7 bushels, and soybean yield will probably be pegged at 53 bushels an acre versus USDA’s September projection of 53.5 bushels, according to estimates from Dow Jones.

Ending corn stockpiles likely will be seen at 2.12 billion bushels and soybean inventories at 292 million bushels. That compares with the previous estimates of 2.11 billion bushels and 300 million bushels, respectively.

Soybean futures for November delivery 2¼¢ to $11.49¼ a bushel overnight on the Chicago Board of Trade.

Soy meal was down 60¢ to $327.80 a short ton and soybean oil futures gained 0.35¢ to 50.6¢ a pound.

Corn futures for December delivery rose ¼¢ to $4.41¾ a bushel.

Wheat futures for December delivery gained 4¼¢ to $5.40 a bushel, and Kansas City futures rose 2½¢ to $5.28¼ a bushel.

2. Drought Conditions Expand Slightly in Midwest

Drought expanded slightly in a nine-state region in the Midwest that includes Iowa and Illinois, the largest producers of corn and soybeans, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

About 35.2% of the area, which also includes Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and

Kentucky, was suffering from drought conditions in the seven days that ended on Nov. 11, the monitor said.

That’s up from 34.8% a week earlier, but well ahead of the 2% that was seeing drought three months earlier.

About 15% of Iowa was under drought conditions, unchanged week over week. None of the state faced such conditions three months ago.

Seventy-four percent of Illinois was suffering from drought last week, down from 76% seven days earlier but up from only 3.6% on Aug. 12, the Drought Monitor said.

Missouri, Wisconsin, and Michigan faced a slight expansion of drought, while Indiana and Ohio saw a contraction.

The percentage of Minnesota seeing drought was unchanged week to week at 22%, while Kentucky was still not seeing any such conditions, the monitor said.

3. Red Flag Warnings Issued for Western Nebraska

Red flag warnings have been issued for northwestern Nebraska and some counties in South Dakota amid extremely dry weather, National Weather Service maps show.

Winds in the area will be sustained from 10 to 20 mph and gust up to 35 mph this afternoon, the agency said.

Relative humidity will drop as low as 15%. Temperatures will reach into the low 80s Fahrenheit.

“Any fire starts will have the potential for quick growth and rapid spread and may be difficult to control,” NWS said.

Rising temperatures in eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas along with breezy and dry conditions may result in increased fire danger, the agency said.

The dry conditions in the region are expected to last through Monday.
