1. Grains, Soybeans Higher Overnight on Shutdown Talks

Grain and soybean futures were higher in overnight trading on optimism that the government shutdown may finally come to an end.

Republican leaders said over the weekend that a deal to end the shutdown that started Oct. 1 was in the works.

Democrats were reportedly open to cutting a deal with Senate Republicans, according to several media reports.

The ongoing shutdown has stopped payments to federal workers and others seeking pay or assistance, threatened to close U.S. airspace, and halted economic reports from several agencies, including the USDA.

While a deal isn’t guaranteed, investors are optimistic that the sides are even talking, considering little progress has been made since the closure started more than five weeks ago.

Corn futures for December delivery rose 2¼¢ to $4.29½ a bushel.

Wheat futures for December delivery gained 7¢ to $5.34¾ a bushel, and Kansas City futures were up 6½¢ to $5.25¾ a bushel.

Soybean futures for November delivery rose 7¢ to $11.24 a bushel overnight on the Chicago Board of Trade. Soy meal was unchanged at $317.10 a short ton, and soybean oil futures added 0.25¢ to 49.93¢ a pound.

2. Senate Advances Bill in Bid to End Government Shutdown

Eight Democrats joined Republicans in a procedural vote Sunday to move forward a package that would fund the government through the end of January.

The stopgap bill would fund several parts of the government, which has been shut down since Oct. 1.

The deal doesn’t include extension of tax credits tied to the Affordable Care Act that will expire at the end of the year. It does, however, require Republicans to vote on a Democratic bill to extend the credits used by more than 20 million people to reduce health insurance premiums.

All government employees would return to work, and the agreement would end any reductions in force until the end of next year.

Democratic senators have been demanding an extension of the ACA tax credits, while Republicans said they won’t discuss extending until the government shutdown is over.

3. Winter Storms to Continue in Indiana, Illinois

Weather maps are lit up this morning, with stormy weather in parts of Indiana and Illinois, and freeze warnings across the South.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for much of northern Indiana and counties in eastern Illinois this morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

As much as 15 inches of snow are expected in the region, with another 2 inches falling on top of what’s already on the ground, the agency said.

Travel conditions are expected to be difficult.

Much of Oklahoma and Arkansas are facing freezing conditions, as warnings have been issued throughout the Gulf Coast, NWS maps show.

Temperatures along the Oklahoma and Arkansas border were forecast to fall to around 20°F overnight, the agency said.

Radio, the way it's meant to be.
