1. Grains Weaker in Early Morning

Shortly before 6:30 a.m. CT, March corn was down ¾¢ at $4.39¾ per bushel.

March soybeans were down 3½¢ at $10.58¾ per bushel. March soymeal was $1.00 lower at $301.30 a short ton, and March soy oil dropped 0.11¢ to 49.33¢ a pound.

March wheat markets were weaker in the early morning. CBOT wheat was down 2¢ at $5.08¾ per bushel. KC wheat dropped 4¢ at $5.18 per bushel. Minneapolis wheat was unchanged at $5.64¼ per bushel.

“Final positioning for year end will be a primary objective in [Wednesday’s] trade. Fresh news is minimal and trade volume is very thin as holiday trade continues. We will see a full day of trade [Wednesday], markets will be closed [Thursday], and reopen Friday morning for another full session,” said Karl Setzer, partner with Consus Ag Consulting.

2. ICYMI: Bird Flu Found in Iowa Flock

From the story:

The Dallas County detection, which impacted a flock of 15 birds, according to an IDALS spokesperson, is the

10th detection in domestic birds in Iowa this year.

The H5N1 strain of the bird flu has also been detected in wild, migratory birds, most recently in large numbers at several lakes in southwest Iowa.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and state departments of agriculture continue to urge producers to practice increased biosecurity to help prevent the spread of the flu.

3. Surging Arctic Air Expected

Surging arctic air continues behind a departing intense cyclone according to the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Weather Prediction Center.

The NWS added a reinforcing surge of arctic air will follow behind a clipper system as an arctic high pressure system from Canada will flow down into the northern U.S on Wednesday.

The NWS said, “The forceful push of the arctic cold front is expected to produce snow showers and even snow squalls later [Wednesday] into the early hours of New Year’s Day across the Ohio Valley to Pennsylvania and western New York. Adjacent areas across the upper Midwest to the far Northern Plains as well as interior New England can also expect snow showers from the clipper.”

Tranquil weather and mild temperatures will move across much of the West because of a stable, high-pressure ridge at all levels of the atmosphere, according to the NWS.
