A driving complaint in Logan County Tuesday afternoon, August 18, led to an officer-involved shooting that left a motorcycle driver dead.

With information from a press release from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 2:28 p.m. to a report of a motorcycle near County Road 55 and Interstate 76, near Crook.

Four sheriff’s deputies were involved in the shooting.

The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was also found near the motorcyclist’s body.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation, while the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, as required by department policy.

The CBI Strategic Communications Director says the original complaint was for speeding. He says few additional details are available while the investigation remains active.

UPDATE: The motorcycle driver killed last Tuesday in an officer-involved shooting in Logan County has been identified as 34-year-old Zachary Newbern of Iliff.

The shooting happened around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, August 18, near I-76 and County Road 55, close to Iliff. The Logan County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were responding to a driving complaint when four deputies became involved in a shooting.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is leading the independent investigation. The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, as required by sheriff’s office policy.

Newbern had a criminal history dating back to 2017, including felony convictions for motor vehicle theft, drug possession, assault, and vehicular eluding. In 2023, he was involved in a high-speed pursuit through Logan and Morgan counties involving a vehicle stolen from his mother. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

Newbern was also facing pending charges in Logan and Arapahoe counties. He was scheduled for an August 31 arraignment in Logan County District Court stemming from an October 2025 arrest.

That case includes allegations of vehicular eluding, felony menacing, drug possession, resisting arrest, driving with a revoked license, and reckless driving.

The CBI investigation into Tuesday’s shooting remains ongoing, and few additional details have been released.
