The Yuma School District-1 put all Yuma School buildings on a lock-out protocol in the middle of the day on Wednesday, April 30th, due to potential threats in the area. The post said that all of the buildings were secure, and all students and staff were safe. No one was allowed in or out of the buildings during the lock-out time, and all afternoon Preschool Sessions were cancelled for the day. The reason for this was stated in a press release from the Yuma Police Department.
PRESS RELEASE: Yuma Police Department –
On Wednesday, April 30th, at approximately 11 am, the W-Y Communications Center received a phone call from an individual claiming to be suicidal. The caller stated they resided in Yuma, Colorado, and also made an alarming reference to ‘Shooting up a school,’ though no specific school was named.
Out of caution and in coordination with law enforcement, all Yuma Schools were placed on lock-out status while authorities worked to determine the identity and location of the caller. Following a thorough investigation, it was determined that the call originated from an IP address located in New York State. Further intelligence indicated that this individual has made similar threatening calls to locations in New Mexico, Arizona, Oregon, and New York.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing and is being coordinated with other law enforcement agencies. There is no active threat to the Yuma community. The Yuma Police Department wishes to thank the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, W-Y Communications, and school officials for their assistance in ensuring the safety of the school students.
