The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is providing follow-up information regarding a vehicle pursuit that took place on Thursday, January 1st.
At that time, Deputy Trace Combs of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office clocked a dark-colored Ford Mustang doing 97 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. This occurred on Highway 385 near Colorado 36, late in the afternoon. Deputy Combs activated his lights, and the Mustang sped up, trying to elude him. As the car was clocked as fast as 130 MPH, the deputy contacted Kansas law enforcement, relinquishing the pursuit when they took over. Unfortunately, the Mustang eluded police near St. Francis, Kansas, that day.
Then on Sunday, January 18th, Deputy Trace Combs was once again on patrol when he observed what appeared to be the same vehicle traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. Just like before, the driver took off and tried to lose law enforcement. Kansas authorities were once again notified, as Stop Sticks were deployed. They didn’t work, but the officer was able to clearly identify the Mustang.
Cheyenne County, Kansas Deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol monitored the surrounding roadways, as it was determined that the car never left St. Francis. The vehicle was found abandoned in town by a Cheyenne County Deputy. The car had no license plates and was seized, following a search by a drug detection dog. This remains an ongoing investigation.
