Fort Morgan Police Department -

On Thursday, March 20th, at approximately 10:25 p.m., members of the Fort Morgan Police Department surrounded a property in Fort Morgan, looking for a known violent parolee who was wanted on assault charges and parole violations that stemmed from a call the weekend prior.

Investigation of this call resulted in a warrant for the arrest of 29-year-old Sergio Martinez, of Fort Morgan, for 2nd Degree Assault and kidnapping.  With the assistance of the Morgan County Sheriff's Office and K9 Dobby, Sergio Martinez was taken into custody.

Martinez has a long history of violence dating back to his time as a juvenile when he was adjudicated as an adult for a robbery in 2013. He was sentenced to 2 years in the Department of Corrections. In October 2016, he was arrested by the Fort Morgan Police Department for a case which was originally charged as kidnapping, menacing, assault, and domestic violence (among other charges). The case was later pled down to a misdemeanor assault, and Martinez was sentenced to 18 months’ probation. In December of 2016, he was arrested in Aurora after failing to comply with probation on the original charges from the Fort Morgan case.

While serving his sentence in the Department of Corrections, in 2017, Martinez was arrested and charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder, among other charges, and eventually pleaded guilty to the charge of 2nd Degree Assault. As a result of this agreement, he was sentenced to 10 years in the Department of Corrections, with 3 years of mandatory parole. He was released after serving 7 years and was living back in Fort Morgan at the time of his latest charges.

When officers received information about the whereabouts of Martinez, the Fort Morgan Police Department deployed our drone along with several officers to locate him. K9 Dobby was called to assist as our own K9 was off due to illness. The officers involved did an excellent job of communicating with Martinez and locating him with the assistance of K9 Dobby. He was taken into custody without incident.

The FMPD would like to thank the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in getting this dangerous criminal off the streets of Fort Morgan.
