There is a lot of smoky & hazy skies across Northeastern Colorado on Thursday, due to fires that are NOT burning in Colorado, but in Western Nebraska.
Our neighbors next door can't seem to catch a break, as two new wildfires erupted overnight in Grant County: the Ashby fire, which has burned nearly 59,000 acres, and the Minor fire, which has scorched over 23,000 acres as of about 10 am (MDT). That's south of Highway 2, and just west of Highway 61 in Nebraska. These fires are burning northeast of where the Morrill fire was burning, which IS 100% contained.
Several fire districts across the area, including the Sterling Fire Department, Yuma County, and the Yuma County Office of Emergency Management, have been notifying residents of the lingering smoke, as high winds near the fires have been hindering containment efforts.
Watch out for possible weather alert updates, such as air quality alerts, being issued throughout the day. As a precaution, if you have breathing problems or any health issues, you might want to limit your outdoor activities on Thursday. The National Weather Service is forecasting breezy conditions for later Thursday afternoon, which could bring some relief from the heavy smoke. USE CAUTION!
