Two CSP Troopers survive shooting attempt - suspect dead - investigation continues
Two Colorado State Patrol troopers are expected to survive after being shot Tuesday morning during an attempted traffic stop near Woodland Park.
State Patrol Chief Colonel Matthew Packard says a trooper tried to pull over a blue Subaru Impreza around 7:15 Tuesday morning near U-S 24 and Piney Point Lane.
The driver opened fire, striking the trooper multiple times. The wounded trooper was able to radio for help. As another trooper drove toward the scene, the suspect passed him in the opposite direction and opened fire again, striking the second trooper.
Both troopers drove themselves to U-C Health Pikes Peak Regional Hospital. One was treated and released, while the other remained hospitalized. Trooper Clark Tinan sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital on Tuesday, August 25th. Trooper Skylar Hoehn sustained serious injuries and was released Thursday, August 27th.
The shooting triggered a massive law enforcement response, including a lockdown of nearby neighborhoods and a Blue Alert for the suspect and vehicle.
About two hours later, a resident called 9-1-1 after recognizing a man doing contract work at a home as matching the suspect’s description.
Deputies arrived within a minute, but Sheriff Jason Mikesell says the man opened fire on officers in what he called an ambush.
A deputy returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead around noon.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into both the shootings involving the troopers and the officer-involved shooting that killed the suspect.
Investigators are also working to determine why the man was initially pulled over.
