Dozens of vehicles were damaged in two major pileup crashes that closed Interstate 70 in both directions through Glenwood Canyon during Sunday’s snowstorm, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Troopers first responded at 11:28 a.m. to a crash at milepost 130, west of Gypsum in Eagle County. When they arrived, they found about 20 vehicles involved, the agency said. All vehicles from that scene were cleared by Sunday afternoon.
Less than 20 minutes later, troopers were called to a second pileup on the opposite side of the canyon. That crash, involving roughly 30 vehicles, was reported at 11:42 a.m. near milepost 119, east of Glenwood Springs in Garfield County.
State Patrol officials did not answer questions about the causes of the crashes but said the I-70 corridor was icy with low visibility throughout the morning.
The pair of crashes forced a full closure of I-70 between Exit 133 (Dotsero) and Exit 114 (Glenwood Springs) for several hours, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Westbound lanes reopened shortly before 2 p.m., and eastbound lanes reopened by 3:45 p.m.
No injuries were reported in either crash, officials said.
Visibility in the canyon was approximately 500 feet.
CDOT cameras showed snow-covered pavement, continued flurries and multiple emergency vehicles working the scenes throughout that morning and afternoon.
