In international news from over the weekend, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is dead following a large-scale joint military operation carried out by the United States and Israel.
Iranian state media confirmed early Sunday that the 86-year-old leader was killed in an airstrike targeting his compound in downtown Tehran. Satellite imagery shows heavy damage to the area.
President Donald Trump announced the strike hours before Iran’s confirmation, calling it what he described as the Iranian people’s “greatest chance” to reclaim their country. He also warned that additional strikes could continue in the coming days.
The coordinated assault reportedly targeted Revolutionary Guard facilities, missile and drone launch sites, and senior members of Iran’s leadership. Iranian officials say several high-ranking commanders were also killed.
Iran has responded with retaliatory missile and drone attacks aimed at Israeli territory and U.S. military installations in the region. Explosions have been reported in multiple Middle Eastern countries as tensions escalate.
Iran’s government has declared 40 days of national mourning and announced the formation of an interim governing council while a new supreme leader is selected. Khamenei had held ultimate authority in Iran since 1989.
World leaders are calling for restraint amid fears the conflict could widen and further destabilize the region.
