Sterling Police: Arrest Warrant for Stabbing

PRESS RELEASE: Sterling, Co- On September 11, 2025, at approximately 11:19 p.m., Sterling
Police Department officers responded to a reported stabbing in the 300 block of
Franklin Street in the City of Sterling, Logan County, Colorado.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim who had sustained a serious
stab wound. Sterling EMS arrived shortly thereafter and transported the 25-
year-old male victim of Sterling, to Sterling Regional MedCenter. He was later
airlifted to a Denver Metro hospital for further care.
Through the course of the investigation, officers learned the victim was involved
in a physical altercation with the suspect, 39-year-old John Byrd, of Sterling.
Witness statements indicated that Byrd stabbed the victim during the
confrontation before fleeing the scene in a gray four-door sedan driven by an
unidentified male.
The Sterling Police Department, assisted by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office
and the Colorado State Patrol, conducted a protective sweep of the property to
ensure there were no additional victims or threats. Detectives from the Sterling
Police Department processed the scene.
Based on the evidence gathered, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for
John Byrd on the charge of Assault in the First Degree with a Deadly
Weapon Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (C.R.S. 18-3-202(1)(a), a Class 3
Felony).
The two parties are known to each other and there is no overt threat to the
community.
