Sterling firefighters will be sporting a new look!
SFD was recently awarded a Safety and Disease Prevention Grant from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control. This grant was used to purchase multipurpose PPE for all of their career staff. This gear is lightweight, more breathable, and dual-purpose certified for wildland and technical rescue applications. The gear will also help reduce stress and fatigue on the crews when they need to wear PPE but do not need to wear full structural gear. The most important goal of this purchase was cancer prevention.
The structural gear is cleaned regularly after exposure to structure and vehicle fires. The carcinogens that the firefighters are exposed to cannot be completely avoided. Having alternative gear available for their crews will limit that exposure and extend the life of their structural gear, which costs significantly more to replace. The Sterling Fire Department is grateful to DFPC for supplying this grant.
