Robert L. Dear, the man accused of killing three people at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic in 2015, has died in federal custody. He was 67.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate database, Dear died Saturday while housed at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri.

Dear was indicted on multiple counts of first-degree murder after the Nov. 27, 2015 shooting that left three people — including a police officer — dead and eight others wounded. His state prosecution was repeatedly delayed after he was found mentally incompetent to stand trial.

In 2019, federal prosecutors charged Dear under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. He had remained in federal custody since then, with his attorneys maintaining that he was not mentally competent for trial.

Officials have not released a cause of death. Let me know if you want this rewritten for radio, shortened, or expanded.
