Sterling Fire Department - On Sunday, following an observation of a large black column of smoke while responding to a different call, Fire 12 and Engine 12 responded to the 16000 Block of CR32 to investigate.
First arriving units found a pile of debris on fire. The property operator admitted that they were burning a small pile of prohibited items when they left it unattended and returned to find it had spread to nearby piles of tires and other items. The crew quickly contained and extinguished the fire.
The Sterling Fire Department wants to take this opportunity to remind everyone that burning ANY items other than natural items is illegal. Also, any controlled burn has to be reported to the Sterling Emergency Communications Center. Failure to do so can result in tickets or fines.
Despite the recent rain, the area is still experiencing dry conditions that continue to get worse with each passing day. Controlled burns need to be monitored closely, and if control is lost, please report it immediately so they can dispatch the proper resources before the fire can grow out of control.
