Phishing Scam Targets People Doing Business with Logan County

Logan County officials are warning residents about a new phishing scam targeting people who do business with the county.

During a work session Tuesday, County Planner Rob Quint told commissioners that several people who recently applied for subdivision exemptions or right-of-way permits have received fraudulent emails demanding payment through wire transfer.

The emails appear to be legitimate — even using county letterhead — and claim applicants owe additional fees. Quint says at least six or seven of the fake statements have gone out so far, some timed to coincide with county hearings on those projects.

Fortunately, recipients recognized the unusually high fee amounts and reported the messages to the Planning and Zoning Department, which has since alerted the Sheriff’s Office.

Commissioner Jim Yahn added that similar scams have targeted vendors working with the Buildings and Grounds Department.

Officials believe the scammer may be obtaining contact information from meeting packets posted online with county agendas. To prevent further misuse, the county has removed those packets and will now post only the agenda page and final resolutions, not full applications.

Anyone who receives a suspicious message is urged to contact the Planning and Zoning Office at 970-522-7879.

County leaders say no money has been lost so far, but they’re reminding residents: never send payments by wire transfer unless you’ve verified the source directly.

Radio, the way it's meant to be.
