Four major wildfires are burning across Nebraska, scorching more than 750-thousand acres statewide and leaving one person dead.

Governor Jim Pillen says the state is in a high-risk period, with no clear turning point in sight as crews battle flames across central and western Nebraska.

The largest blaze — the Morrill Fire — has burned nearly 600-thousand acres, much of it grazing land that supports an estimated 35-thousand cattle. At one point, officials say as many as 350-thousand acres burned in just 18 hours.

Firefighting efforts have ramped up significantly. Forty-seven members of the Nebraska National Guard have been deployed, along with two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters dropping water from the air. Crews completed 68 water drops in a single day, releasing more than 46-thousand gallons.

Additional support is coming from neighboring states. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has sent two more Blackhawk helicopters and crews to assist.

More than two-thousand personnel from the Rocky Mountain Incident Command Team, including crew members from Colorado, are now helping coordinate the response, while local fire chiefs remain in command on the ground.

Governor Pillen says he has spoken with the White House, and a federal disaster declaration is now in the works. State officials say that the process has not been impacted by the partial government shutdown.

Fire managers say the key challenge now is holding containment lines across a roughly 200-mile perimeter, as shifting winds continue to test those defenses. Strategic fire lines are also being considered around communities that could be at risk.

Officials warn the situation remains volatile, with dangerous fire conditions expected to continue.

Officials are now providing a closer look at the four major wildfires burning across Nebraska, each at different stages of containment.

The Road 203 Fire is burning south of Halsey and Dunning within the Nebraska National Forest. That fire has burned more than 35-thousand acres and is about 36 percent contained. Crews say 160 personnel are assigned, supported by aircraft, engines, and heavy equipment. Investigators say the fire originated from a federal prescribed burn.

Further south, the Lincoln County — or Cottonwood Fire — is burning near Brady and Gothenburg, south of Interstate 80. That fire has scorched more than 131-thousand acres and is now 40 percent contained. The cause remains under investigation, and evacuations are in place for residents around Jeffrey Lake.

The largest and most destructive blaze is the Morrill County Fire, burning north of Highway 92 between Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Lake McConaughy. Governor Jim Pillen says the fire was sparked by an electrical line during high winds. It has burned more than 572-thousand acres — making it the largest wildfire in Nebraska history and one of the 30 largest in the United States.

One fatality has been confirmed. Eighty-six-year-old Rose White of Arthur died while attempting to escape the flames. The fire is currently just 18 percent contained.

And in north-central Nebraska, the Anderson Bridge Fire is burning west of Valentine. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, that fire has burned about 17-thousand acres and is now 60 percent contained.

Officials say all four fires remain active, with changing winds continuing to pose challenges for crews on the ground.
