In a posting from the Merino Volunteer Fire Department, they extended a big ‘Thank You’ to the multiple agencies and individuals who all responded and helped with the large haystack fire on County Road 12 near Atwood on Wednesday night, July 22.

Along with the Merino Volunteer Fire Department, the other agencies that assisted were the Fire Departments from Sterling, Fleming, Peetz, Hillrose, and Stoneham/New Raymer, as well as the Logan County Road & Bridge Department, along with all of the neighbors who brought bale-moving equipment. All of the help kept the fire from becoming a much bigger problem.

There was also a shout-out to Assistant Chief Davis, who kept things running by covering multiple other emergency calls during the fire.

The Merino Fire Department wants to let the public know that the haystack will continue to burn for several more days, as the landowner will be monitoring the situation. Smoke may be visible in the area, along with possible flames, which is expected. There is no need to be alarmed unless noticeable conditions change.
