It was another active afternoon as far as severe weather in Northeastern Colorado on Monday, as two separate systems merged, as they headed east over the plains.

The first alerts went out after 4 pm for central Washington County for a severe thunderstorm warning that was extended a couple of times to 4:45pm. (MDT) Reports of 60-70mph winds were reported with the storm throughout the afternoon and evening hours, with large hail, either quarter or half-dollar in size. The storms stretch into Logan County while hitting all the towns within the area including Otis and Atwood.

Two big warnings came out for Yuma County with a severe thunderstorm warning lasting until 5:15pm, and a TORNADO WARNING issued for Yuma County, with reports of law enforcement confirming a twister on the ground about 14 miles north of Yuma, near Lonestar. The system was moving east at 20mph, with reports of possible ping-pong ball sized hail associated with it. It was now part of a line of storms that merged in Washington County and was stretching as far north as Sydney & Potter Nebraska and going as far south as Burlington & Flagler.

The tornado warning expired at 5pm, with no reports of injuries or damage. Heavy rain and hail continued however as the severe thunderstorm warning was extended for Yuma County until 6:30pm, with another severe warning issued for Phillips and Sedgwick Counties until 6pm for the same conditions.

The storms weakened as they headed into Kansas and Nebraska, with the warnings expiring up and down the line of storms. There was a bit of a reprieve late Monday, as a severe thunderstorm warning popped up for Morgan County after 10pm, with lightning and heavy rains in spots. It expired by 11pm, as things calmed down overnight.

There is just a 20% chance of storms for Tuesday across the region, with hot temperatures in the upper 90’s and low 100’s for the middle of the week, and temps back in the 80’s by Friday and Saturday.
