PRESS RELEASE: Morgan County Sheriff’s Office -
Sunday, August 31st, at approximately 10:44 a.m., the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a plane crash at the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport. Deputies from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Officers from the Fort Morgan Police Department, the Colorado State Patrol, as well as the Fort Morgan Fire Department and Morgan County Ambulance responded to the scene.
It was determined that two planes were involved in the incident. A small Cessna was on final approach to the airport when it was struck mid-air by a second small plane. Both aircraft crashed and caught fire. There were two people in each plane. The two occupants of the Cessna sustained minor injuries and were released at the scene. One occupant of the other plane was transported to a local hospital, while the fourth individual was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Morgan County Coroner’s Office.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been contacted and will assist with the investigation. (They extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic event.) Many agencies assisted in this situation, and there were some citizens who tried to keep the fire under control until the fire department could arrive on scene.
This is an active investigation, and the names of the parties involved are not being released at this time. No further information is available at this time, due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
In addition, the airport was hosting the aerobatics competition this weekend. The ‘Kyle Scott Dust-Up’ was organized by Chapter 12 of the International Aerobatic Club.
*The 2 planes involved are a Cessna 172 and an Extra EA300, with reports that both planes were trying to land at Bristol Field at the same time on Sunday.
The airport was closed Sunday for the crash clean-up and investigation. This is a developing story.
