Man Shooting Gun in Home Faces Charges

Washington County Sheriff’s Office –

On Friday, August 30th, at approximately 9:15am, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a disturbance at a residence in the 34000 block of CR-44. They were also notified that a male subject in the home was shooting a pistol randomly inside the residence. All the other individuals inside the home got out safely, including a small child.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office contacted one of the witnesses, identified the one remaining person in the residence as Matthew Martin, who had barricaded inside by this time. A perimeter was set up around the home and the Yuma Police Department was called for assistance with their negotiator and drone services, as several attempts were made to contact the male subject, but to no avail. A call to the Northeast Regional SWAT team was placed for assistance in getting Matthew Martin out of the home, along with the Adams County SWAT team, as they all arrived on-scene a few hours later.

The Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant for the residence as well as an arrest warrant for Mr. Martin. Both SWAT teams approached the home and Mr. Martin was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Washington County Detention Facility for booking.

Mr. Martin faces several charges including Felony Menacing, Child Abuse & Reckless Endangerment. Sheriff Furrow would like to thank the Yuma Police Department, The Northeast Regional SWAT team & the Adams County SWAT team for their assistance with this incident.

(Mr. Martin is presumed innocent until proven guilty.)
