In 1869, the Denver Gas Co. was created; it would eventually become Public Service Company of
Colorado (PSCo). The company initially provided gas for lighting. In 1881, Colorado Electric Co. offered electric
power. The two companies merged in 1899 to become the Denver Gas & Electric Co. (DG&E), headed by Henry Doherty. In 1923, DG&E and Western Power & Light merged to form PSCo.
The Colorado Power Co. and its subsidiary Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power in Wyoming came under the
PSCo name on Sept. 3, 1924. PSCo became an independent and autonomous operation in November 1943
when it served 80% of Colorado’s gas and electricity needs. As demand for energy continued to grow, so did
PSCo. Eventually, the company merged with Southwestern Public Service Co. (SPS), based in Amarillo, Texas, to form New Century Energies (NCE). In Aug. 2000, New Century Energies, Inc. (NCE) and Northern States Power Co. (NSP) merged and formed Xcel Energy Inc.
Xcel is Colorado’s largest utility, providing electric service to 1.6 million customers and natural gas to 1.5
million customers. Nearly 4,000 Xcel employees call Colorado home. In 2024, Xcel’s energy mix was 45%
carbon-free, and the company has reduced its emissions by 57% since 2005.
Over the next 5 years, Xcel plans to invest $22.3 billion in Colorado across its various business units; to
include new electric generation, bolstering the natural gas system, growing our renewable energy portfolio,
expanding our transmission network and greatly enhancing capacity and reliability in the distribution system.
In 2024, Xcel spent $810 million with local Colorado contractors and suppliers, paid $237 million in
property taxes, and donated $4.68 million toward community investments. Over 1,600 Xcel volunteers
donated 28,500 man-hours with 313 nonprofits across the state to help make their communities stronger.
The Pawnee and Manchief Generating Stations near Brush are major assets in Xcel’s system, providing
jobs, tax base, and electricity to the region. Xcel has service centers in Sterling and Brush, where local crews
and their ubiquitous bucket trucks come from to complete work and repairs.
