The Logan County Chamber of Commerce hosted a local election forum Thursday night at Northeastern Junior College, giving voters a closer look at what’s on their November ballots — from school and county tax measures to Sterling City Council races.
Community volunteer Chris Connor spoke on behalf of Ballot Question 4E, a proposal from the RE-1 Valley School District asking voters to approve a $20 million bond. The money would help repair aging schools, improve security, and provide matching funds for a state BEST grant. Connor said the upgrades are crucial to keep students safe and the district competitive.
County Commissioner Jim Yahn discussed Measure 1F, which would extend Logan County’s half-percent sales tax through 2030. The tax helps maintain county-owned buildings like the courthouse, fairgrounds and justice center — projects Yahn said would otherwise rely on property taxes.
Sterling City Manager John Sheldon outlined two city measures: a charter change to allow online publication of public notices, and a new one-percent sales and use tax dedicated to fixing roads, sidewalks and drainage systems.
Candidates for Sterling City Council also shared their priorities — focusing on economic development, public safety, and infrastructure.
The evening ended with voters meeting one-on-one with candidates and speakers to ask more questions.
