KFTM Sports Update 01/08/24

Local sports began the first weekend of 2024 with basketball on Friday, followed by a full day of wrestling on Saturday. Brush hoop teams dropped both of their games against the University Bulldogs on Friday. The Lady Diggers lost (58-16) at home and the boys were defeated (72-22) in Greeley. 


Wiggins basketball went (3-1) over the weekend and had their first home game of the season on Friday against Byers. The Lady Tigers earned a (42-23) victory with the boys coming up short (53-47) against the Bulldogs. The two teams cashed in a pair of wins on Saturday at Haxtun. The Lady Tigers won (54-44) to keep the Bulldogs winless and the boys had a strong fourth quarter to seal a (60-50) victory and complete the sweep in Haxtun. 


Fort Morgan grapplers opened the new year with a 6th place finish in Niwot at the Gary Daum tournament Saturday. Noah Aguirre at 175 was the Mustangs top placer in second as they placed a total of seven wrestlers. Fort Morgan is off until Thursday when they travel to Northridge for a dual with the Grizzlies at 7pm, then travel to Florence Friday for the two-day Mel Smith Invite. Three days of wrestling begins on Thursday on hometown Radio KFTM, 94.1 FM and online at medialogicradio.com


Brush sent a handful of wrestlers to California for the Doc Buchanan tournament, while the remainder of the squad was at Valley High School. The Diggers had five placers with two champions, Ritchie Bruno at 175 and Christuan Astorga at 215. 


The Wiggins Tigers placed all seven wrestlers and took second as a team in Bennett. Jorge Mendez at 190 and Heavyweight Micheal Pecheco were the lone Tiger champions. Wiggins is at Strasburg Thursday for a triangular with the host Indians and Sterling starting at 5pm.
