A stubborn fire near the South Platte River near Fort Morgan that ignited on Sunday, March 23rd, started back up the next day, as the Fort Morgan Fire Department responded both times. Crews were dispatched to the tree fires in the area near the intersection of County Road T.5 & 20.5 on Sunday and battled the flames for a couple of hours near the Twamore Trails, north of the river. With help from Darin Neb Excavation, who broke down stacks of tree limbs from the 2013 flood, the FMFD got the fire under control and cleared the scene.
However, on Monday, March 24th, strong winds helped to spread the fire, as it had reignited, spreading east to the river bottom. Several other crews were called in as this time it took much more effort to put the flames out, as it took about 6 hours for crews to get the fire back under control.
The Fort Morgan Fire Department was assisted by the Brush Fire Department, the Wiggins Fire Department, the Morgan County Ambulance Service, The Fort Morgan Police Department, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Fort Morgan Street Department. Also helping was the State of Colorado with aerial support from 2 air tankers making several water drops. Twamore Trails remained closed through Tuesday.
No exact cause of the fire is known currently.
