Disturbance in Sterling Involving Firearm - Two People Arrested

PRESS RELEASE - Sterling, Co- On September 24, 2025, at approximately 4:59 PM, the Sterling Police Department responded to the 200 block of Taylor Street on the report of a disturbance involving a firearm. Multiple callers reporting a disturbance between a male and a female and a firearm being discharged.
Upon arrival, Sterling Police Officers contacted several juveniles in front of the residence who stated the male involved with the firearm was inside. Officers also contacted a female outside, identified as 39-year-old Samantha Gamez, of Sterling, in possession of a firearm. The weapon, a 9mm handgun, was recovered from her person.
Officers learned Samantha became involved in a verbal and physical altercation with 49-year-old Duane “Teddy” Gamez, of Sterling, regarding a personal dispute. From the investigation officers learned that during the altercation, Duane produced a firearm and threatened her. Samantha ultimately ended up with the firearm discharging one round from the firearm into the air.
Witness statements, along with evidence gathered at the scene, corroborated what was reported. Further investigation revealed that Duane Gamez is a convicted felon, prohibiting him from possessing firearms.
Duane Gamez was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Logan County Jail. He faces Domestic Violence-related charges, including Felony Menacing, Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender, and Harassment.
Samantha Gamez was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Logan County Jail. She faces Domestic Violence-related charges, including Felony Menacing, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, Harassment, and Unlawfully Carrying a Concealed Weapon.
The case remains under investigation, and additional charges may be filed.
