The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission has unanimously selected Laura Clellan as the new director of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Clellan had been serving as interim director since December first, following the departure of former director Jeff Davis. The commission approved her appointment during a brief meeting on Monday.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages the state’s wildlife species, oversees hunting and fishing programs, and operates 43 state parks and 350 state wildlife areas. The agency generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year.
Clellan takes over the agency as it continues implementing Colorado’s voter-approved wolf reintroduction program. In her interim role, she led the agency’s response to challenges from federal officials regarding that program.
CPW is also working to address a zebra mussel infestation in the Colorado River, plan for the possible reintroduction of wolverines, and develop a statewide beaver management plan.
Governor Jared Polis praised Clellan’s leadership in a news release, saying her work over the past several months has been critical for the agency.
Clellan previously served as adjutant general and executive director of the Colorado Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. She retired in October after more than 30 years of military service, including time in the U.S. Army and the Colorado National Guard, and was named the sole finalist for the director’s position earlier this month following a nationwide search.
She now officially assumes leadership of Colorado Parks and Wildlife moving forward.
