National Weather Service - *COLD WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM MDT (4 am CST) FRIDAY TO 9 AM MST SUNDAY. (Until 11 am MDT – Sunday for extreme eastern plains and the tri-state area.) This is for Morgan, Weld, Adams, Arapahoe, Elbert, Lincoln, Logan, Washington, Sedgwick, Phillips, Yuma, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, Rawlins, Decatur, Norton, Sherman, Thomas, Sheridan, Graham, Wallace, Gove, Greeley, Wichita, Dundy, Hitchcock & Red Willow Counties in Colorado and the entire tri-state region.

*Bitter cold wind chills as low as 20 below expected.

A prolonged period of bitterly cold weather is expected in the wake of an Arctic cold frontal passage early Friday morning. Periods of accumulating snow are possible on both Friday and Saturday, when air temperatures will struggle to rise above the single digits during the daylight hours. Below-zero temperatures are likely during the morning hours on both Saturday and Sunday. Wind chill readings ranging from 10 to 20 below zero are expected throughout this period.

The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in 30 minutes or less. Unsheltered people will have a high risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Also, livestock and pets will be vulnerable to the cold, so ensure adequate sheltering during this extended period of cold weather.

Use caution when venturing outdoors. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing. Dress in multiple layers, including a hat and gloves. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Young or smaller animals are at greatest risk for frostbite and hypothermia. Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
