Sterling Police Investigate Shots Fired Incident

Sterling, CO – At approximately 08:19 a.m. on July 11, 2025, officers from the Sterling Police Department responded to reports of multiple gunshots fired in the 200 block of Wells Street. Upon arrival, officers contained the scene and immediately detained the potential suspect, James Luark, a 70-year-old male resident of Sterling.


While conducting a safety sweep of Luark’s residence, officers located a firearm inside the home, and a search warrant for the residence is pending. The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Luark fired several rounds from within his home, which exited the exterior of the home, striking an area near the front porch of a neighbor’s residence. The neighbor, who was also standing on his front porch at the time of the

incident, reported hearing gun shots and was fortunately not injured, nor was anyone else.


This was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.


Mr. Luark was arrested on the following charges:

  • Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender – C.R.S. 18-12-108 (Class 6 Felony)

  • Illegal Discharge of a Firearm – C.R.S. 18-12-107.5 (Class 5 Felony)

  • Reckless Endangerment – C.R.S. 18-3-208 (Class 2 Misdemeanor)

  • Prohibited Use of a Weapon – C.R.S. 18-12-106(1)(d) (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
