Morgan County Sheriff’s Office – SCAM ALERT
The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is investigating a scam in which a suspect falsely claimed to be a representative of a major cell phone provider and offered discounts, free products, and reduced monthly bills.
The scammer convinced the victim that, in order to receive the promotional offer, they needed to order new phones through their account and then ship the devices to addresses provided by the suspect. Unfortunately, the victim followed the instructions, resulting in unauthorized charges and additional phone lines being added to their account.
Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and often sound convincing. They may appear knowledgeable about your account, use professional language, and create a sense of urgency or exclusivity to gain your trust.
Remember:
• Never ship products to a third party at the direction of someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
• Verify promotions by contacting the company directly using a phone number or website you know is legitimate.
• Be cautious of anyone claiming they can access your account information or see what you are doing online.
• Review your account statements regularly for unauthorized charges or changes.
• If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, contact your financial institution, notify the affected company immediately, and report the incident to law enforcement. The Morgan County Sheriff's Office encourages everyone to share this information with family members, friends, and neighbors. A simple conversation could prevent someone from becoming the next victim.
