Safeway says it will close 10 Colorado grocery stores by November, part of a corporate restructuring after combining two divisions. Locations include Englewood, Northglenn, Denver, Aurora, Fort Collins, Loveland, two stores in Colorado Springs, and on the Eastern Plains in La Junta and Lamar. The Safeway location in Fort Morgan will remain open.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7, which represents most of the employees affected, warns that residents in La Junta and Lamar will be left without a full-service grocer, forcing some to drive 60 miles for groceries.
The closures follow recent shutdowns of a Safeway in Lakewood and a King Soopers in Centennial. Safeway’s parent company, Albertsons, abandoned a planned merger with Kroger late last year.
