President Trump signs bill to end federal shutdown

President Donald Trump has signed a government funding bill, officially ending a record 43-day federal shutdown that left hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay and disrupted travel and food assistance nationwide.
The shutdown stemmed from a standoff over extending enhanced tax credits that help lower the cost of health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Democrats demanded the extension be part of the short-term spending bill. Republicans refused, calling it a separate policy fight.
The House approved the funding package late Wednesday on a 222-to-209 vote, largely along party lines. All four Democrats in Colorado’s congressional delegation opposed the measure; the state’s four Republicans supported it.
Democratic Congressman Jason Crow of Aurora said the bill fails to address rising health care costs. Republican Gabe Evans of Fort Lupton countered that Democrats “held the American people hostage” during the shutdown.
The new law funds three spending bills and keeps the rest of the government open through January 30th. It restores pay for federal employees, reverses firings made during the shutdown, and secures funding for food assistance programs through the rest of the fiscal year.
It also includes $203 million for congressional security and a controversial provision allowing lawmakers to sue if their electronic records are searched without notice.
Congress is expected to revisit the health care tax credits before mid-December, but there’s no guarantee the parties will reach a deal before the subsidies expire.
