NOTICE TO PUBLIC
On Sunday, July 6, 2025, the City of Fort Morgan’s Light & Power Department was called out on an outage around Main Street and Riverview Avenue around McDonald’s. It was discovered that Mylar balloons had become wrapped around the power lines causing outages to several businesses in the area.
It took some time to get the power back on; therefore, we thank those who were impacted for their patience during that time. The city would like to kindly remind everyone to please keep Mylar balloons away from power lines as they pose a potential threat to power distribution.
When a Mylar balloon gets caught in power lines, its metallic coating acts as a conductor of electricity, creating a short circuit that can lead to power outages, fires, and even explosions. Due to the balloon’s conductive surface, it can bridge the gap between wires or between a wire and a grounded object, allowing electricity to flow in an unintended path.
On behalf of the City of Fort Morgan, we thank you for your awareness.
