PRESS RELEASE: Morgan County Sheriff’s Office - September 3, 2026 -

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to report that a child who was the subject of a Missing and Endangered Person Alert has been located safely and returned to her mother.

On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office received a Writ of Execution/Pick Up Order issued by the Adams County District Court directing law enforcement to assist in returning the minor child to her mother. Deputies attempted to locate the child and her father, Daniel Spencer, at locations in the Fort Morgan area but were unsuccessful.

Later that evening, the child’s mother reported that her daughter had not been returned following a scheduled visitation with Spencer on Friday, August 28, 2026. Based on the information available at the time, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

CBI determined that the circumstances did not meet the criteria for an AMBER Alert. However, a Missing and Endangered Person Alert was issued for the child, along with an attempt-to-locate notification for Spencer.

Throughout Tuesday, September 1st, and Wednesday, September 2nd, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office personnel continued efforts to locate the child and worked to arrange for her safe return. Spencer communicated with law enforcement but repeatedly indicated that he would return the child as directed by the court order, but never followed through with returning the child. On the evening of September 2, 2026, an arrest warrant was issued for Spencer for Violation of Custody Order, a Class 5 Felony.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., Morgan County Sheriff's Office Deputies observed a vehicle associated with Spencer in the Fort Morgan area. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 34 and identified Spencer as the driver.

Spencer was taken into custody on the outstanding warrant. The child was located safe and unharmed, sleeping in a car seat in the back seat of the vehicle. Her mother responded to the scene, and the child was returned to her care. Spencer was transported to the Morgan County Detention Center.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Fort Morgan Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and all personnel who assisted in locating the child and bringing this incident to a safe conclusion. Most importantly, the child was found safe and returned to her mother.

Because this case involves a minor child and an ongoing court matter, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office will not release additional information regarding the child or the underlying custody proceedings at this time.

*All persons arrested or charged with a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
