PRESS RELEASE: Morgan County Sheriff’s Office -
On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with investigators from the Colorado Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Protection and veterinarians from Colorado State University, executed a court-authorized search warrant at a residence in rural Morgan County following an investigation into suspected illegal animal fighting activities.
During the search, investigators located 86 birds on the property. Based on the observations of veterinary experts and investigators, the birds exhibited physical modifications and conditions consistent with preparation for organized rooster fighting. Investigators also located evidence believed to be associated with the breeding, training, and care of fighting birds.
As a result of the investigation, Gilberto Vazquez Ramos was arrested and booked into the Morgan County Jail on the following charges:
• Animal Fighting – C.R.S. 18-9-204(1)(a)
• Cruelty to Animals – C.R.S. 18-9-202(1)(a)
The birds were evaluated by veterinary professionals on scene. Due to their condition and in consultation with the Colorado Department of Agriculture and Colorado State University veterinarians, the animals were humanely euthanized. Animal fighting is illegal in Colorado and is often associated with significant animal suffering and other criminal activity.
