It was a busy Saturday for First Responders in Fort Morgan, with a major structure fire occurring Saturday afternoon. The activity started at approximately 1:15 pm on Saturday (November 8th). The Fort Morgan Fire Department responded to a garage fire in the 400 block of Aurora Street, between Beaver and Bijou, and 3-4 blocks from West Street.

By the time the fire department had arrived, the garage was fully involved, and the fire had spread to about 5 separate structures, as well as a fence and a camper. The windy conditions on Saturday made conditions even more difficult, as 20-40 MPH winds were sustained throughout the afternoon.

The FMFD was assisted by the Brush Volunteer Fire Department, the Wiggins Fire Department, the Morgan County Ambulance Service, the Fort Morgan Police Department, and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement blocked traffic on Bijou and Beaver during the fire. Crews stayed on-scene for 4 hours, while the fire rekindled at a couple of places. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

There was one casualty, however, and that is the fire department now has to replace one of its hoses. Why? It was brought to their attention that a fire hose may have been run over by someone in their vehicle. Due to the high pressure built up in the fire hose during the incident, this can be extremely dangerous. It can also halt water operations during a fire, and even though the hose wasn’t ruptured, it will still need to be replaced out of precaution. Not only is this unsafe, but it is also an illegal & punishable offense.

When an emergency like this happens, it’s best to stay away, keep your distance, not crowd, and let the crews respond safely, without interference from the public.
