At their meeting Tuesday, October 7th, Logan County Commissioners discussed placing a temporary moratorium on wind, solar, battery storage, and data center projects. The pause would stay in place while the county revises its regulations and permit fees.
Planning and Zoning staff are already rewriting rules for battery storage, and Commissioner Jim Santomaso said wind and solar standards adopted last year also need updating. He’s pushing for the county’s first-ever regulations on data centers as well.
Planner Rob Quint told commissioners the new rules for energy projects should be ready soon, but data center guidelines will take longer since few examples exist in Colorado. County Attorney Alan Samber recommended a six-month moratorium, which could be lifted early if the work is finished sooner. The board plans to vote on that proposal October 21st.
