Sterling Tigers softball finished up their regular season on Thursday in Greeley with a loss to the University Bulldogs by a score of 13-5. Softball's final record is 15-7-1, and 7-5 in Patriot League play. The good news is that the Tigers remain in the top-8 in CHSAA's selection index, meaning the ladies will likely stay home for the October 14th Regional round. We'll learn on Monday, which three teams will be sent to Ster-Town to compete for the 2 available spots in State.
Sterling football suffered a tough loss on Thursday night at the hands of rival Bursh, 41-13. Tigers suffered 4 turnovers on downs, including twice deep in Beetdiggers territory. The boys drop to 2-4, 1-1 on the season. They'll travel to Timnath next Thursday night and will probably have to win their final three games to have a shot at qualifying for the playoffs in 2023.
After a week off, Sterling volleyball returned to the court on Thursday night, hosting Frontier Academy. The Tigers made quick work of the Wolverines in straight sets; 25-14, 25-5, 25-17. Junior Ady Santomaso led a balanced attack with 8 kills, while 6 different Tigers had at least 4 on the night. Volleyball is 9-4, 6-2, and travel to Berthoud on Tuesday before hosting defending State Champion Platte Valley on Thursday.
In State golf, Will Bornhoft represented the Tigers and finished tied for 10th with a 2-day score of 18-over par. Bornhoft earned All-State honors for his efforts. Junior Ethan Thyne also qualified for State and improved by 12 shots from Day 1 to Day 2 finishing in the top-50 in the event.
Finally, Boy's soccer drew to a 6-6 final on Thursday afternoon hosting the Berthoud Spartans. Sophomore striker Junior Rivas put 3 goals into the back of the net, while junior Taten Himes scored twice and fellow junior Roman Meraz also scored a goal. Tigers are 0-7-1, 0-3-1 on the season and host Skyview Academy on Saturday morning.
