KFTM Sports Update 02/19/24

Morgan County came home with a 3A state runner up trophy, a trio of  state champions and a total of 11 placers from the State Tournament in Denver over the weekend. The Brush Beetdiggers had two of those state champs and finished as the State Runner up behind team champ Mullen with 122.5 points. 


Nick Dardanes at 132 pounds defeated Josiah Gonzales of Fort Lupton in a fall time of (3:57). At 175, Sophomore Ritchie Bruno capped off a perfect (27-0) season with a pin of Dilan Ruiz of La Junta in (3:46). Wiggins senior Americo Lorenzini brought the curtain down in the 2024 season with a pin of his own in (3:19) over Tavery Chappel of Wray to claim the 285 pound crown in 2A. 


The Tigers ended the weekend in  9th place and had three wrestlers earn them 61 points. Fort Morgan finished in 23rd, with Noah Aguirre their lone placer in fifth at 175. Congratulations to Brush’ s Olivia Herrera who took 6th place to  become the first ever placers for the Lady Diggers. 


On the hardwood over the weekend, Weldon Valley completed their regular season with two games in two days. The Lady Warriors won over Peetz on Friday ( 57-42), then fell to Prairie (61-18) on Saturday. The girls are in Sterling tomorrow night for the first round of districts and face Peetz at 5pm from NJC. Winner moves on to take on top seed Briggsdale Thursday at 4pm.


The boys lost their final two, (51-31) to Peetz and (44-29) against Prairie. The Warriors are also at NJC on Tuesday and face the Fleming Wildcats at 6:30pm. Winner moves on to Thursday and the top ranked Peetz Bulldogs at 6:30m. 


Brush basketball began their district tournaments on Friday and had both teams on the road. The Lady Diggers lost at Platte Valley (58-29) and next play Frontier Academy at home tomorrow night at 5:30pm. As for the boys, they fell in Timnath (61-39) and are also home to Frontier Academy tomorrow night at 7pm.


As for Wiggins, the Lady Tigers are home to Caliche tomorrow night at 6pm, while the boys are in Akron starting at 7pm. Winners advance to the 2A District 2 semifinals to be held at NJC in Sterling on Friday night.
